Storyline & Synopsis

“Upon landing there for the first time, they saw native men who, seeing these people they had never seen before, fled in droves to take refuge in the thick forests like timid hares before greyhounds. Our men, following the crowd, captured only one woman and took her to the ships. She was well fed and given drink, and adorned with finery (for all those people of both sexes live completely naked, content with what nature provides), and they set her free. As soon as the woman rejoined her people (for she knew where they had fled), and after telling them how admirable the adornment and generosity of our men were, they all rushed to the beach and believed them to be people sent from heaven. Swimming ashore, they brought gold, of which they had some abundance, and exchanged it for a piece of earthenware or a glass cup. If our men gave them a small bell, a jingle bell, a piece of mirror, or something else, they would accept it as payment.”
